Former Senator Panfilo Lacson proposes reversing bus traffic flow on EDSA to alleviate congestion. Discussions have intensified regarding busway rules and exemptions after recent violations.

Proposed Counterflow Traffic on EDSA Busway

With the development of new violations of the rules on the EDSA bus lane, former senator Panfilo Lacson proposed a new solution: change the direction of transport movement. “Let’s implement a counterflow on EDSA for buses, let the northbound direction become southbound, let the problem be solved by itself,” Lacson said at a press conference of the congressional bloc Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. He also clarified that a similar system already operates in other cities, for example, in Taibei, Taiwan. “Everyone is concerned about beloved collisions. I drive a car every day, so I know what I’m talking about, so let’s make it successful,” he added.

Former senator Tito Sotto expressed the opinion that there should be no additional exceptions for the use of the bus lane on EDSA. “You can’t leave earlier, can you? Why do you, President of the Philippines, want to be exempt from the bus lane? It cannot be like that,” he stated. Sotto suggested that Manila creates an emergency situation, and no one will be exempt from following the bus lane rules on EDSA.

The former legislator also suggested that the Manila transport development office should analyze his proposal and assess whether the current infrastructure allows changing the direction of bus movement.
